THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO PEAK UCHITEL

Peak Uchitel guideAfter ascending Peak Uchitel and writing about it on my blog, I decided to give my readers more information about the mountain. This is not a climbing guide to Peak Uchitel. Instead, this is an article that should warn you against the hidden dangers of climbing Peak Uchitel without a guide, proper information, acclimatization, and preparation.

I ascended Peak Uchitel on the 13th of August 2022. Just a day after my ascent, a Russian tourist died while descending the mountain. The man climbed Peak Uchitel with his friend. While descending the mountain, the couple decided to shorten the descent and took a very dangerous route. One of the men fell down and died. The second climber received serious injuries.

I heard about this news today in the morning while browsing the Internet. Though Peak Uchitel is considered one of the easiest and highest mountains to climb, I would say that the mountain is very dangerous. I have climbed it, and I know that its safety and ease are very deceiving. Here are some of the factors that make climbing Peak Uchitel a very dangerous feat.

YOU CAN DIE EVEN ON A LOW MOUNTAIN

You don't have to climb a 6000-8000 meters high mountain to be in danger. You can get injuries or even die even while ascending low mountains. Do you know that mountain Washington is one of the deadliest mountains in the world? Its height is only 1917 meters.

Even though Peak Uchitel is only 4545 meters high, bad weather or an unexpected accident can put you in a very dangerous situation. If you get lost while ascending or descending the mountain, you can take a dangerous route, and consequently, put yourself in danger.

BAD WEATHER CAN PUT YOU IN DANGER

avalanche in a mountainA heavy storm, rain, icefall, avalanche, fog, and many other factors can be potentially deadly regardless of the height and technicality of a mountain. Rains in the mountains don't feel like rain in cities. Heavy rain at a high altitude will torture your body. Your limbs will freeze in a matter of a few minutes, and you won't even feel your fingers.

I have experienced bad weather at high altitudes, and I can tell you that it is a terrible feeling in a very dangerous situation. Heavy fog can make a mountain trail and route completely invisible. This can lead to fatal consequences.

Peak Uchitel is a high mountain and it also has bad weather. Climbing a high peak without proper weather forecasting is a suicidal activity. If a fog, rain, or storm catches you at the height of 4000 meters above sea level, you will be in real danger. If bad weather conditions catch you on the Peak Uchitel, you will be in real trouble.

Thus, the ease of climbing Peak Uchitel shouldn't deceive you. Climbing mountains is easy. Descending requires more caution. 90% of all casualties, injuries, and deaths on mountains happen during descents. The trail to Peak Uchitel is very steep. In bad weather conditions, even experienced climbers will face challenges while descending the mountain.

NON-TECHNICALITY OF PEAK UCHITEL IS DECEIVING

Peak Uchitel is a non-technical mountain. You don't need any alpinist equipment or professional training to ascend it. Hiking poles are a must while climbing and descending Peak Uchitel. However, this factor shouldn't deceive you. Mountains punish you when you underestimate them.

Though Peak Uchitel is a non-technical mountain, a big part of the trail to the peak goes through big boulders which are very unstable. While ascending the mountain, I slightly injured my right foot by a boulder. This injury could be more serious or even fatal.

Even if a mountain is non-technical, other factors such as bad weather, inexperience, too high self-confidence, and negligence can lead to bad consequences. Don't underestimate Peak Uchitel. I have climbed it, and it is a very challenging mountain.

TRAIL TO PEAK UCHITEL GOES THROUGH BOULDERS

Trail to Peak Uchitel

Trail to Uchitel Peak is composed of unstable boulders. This makes the route extremely dangerous. After or during a rain, this trail gets deadly risky.

As I have already mentioned before, one of the worst factors that make ascent and descent to/from Uchitel Peak dangerous is its trail. At the start of the route, the trail is normal. Near the peak, the whole trail is composed of unstable boulders. Every single step up is potentially dangerous. You never know how stable a bolder you are stepping on.

After heavy rain, these boulders become very slippery. Walking on slippery boulders at a height above 4000 meters is very extremely risky. Add a heavy fog, inexperience, and the absence of essential equipment such as trekking poles, and you get a deadly mixture of factors that can lead to injuries and death.

ALTITUDE SICKNESS ON PEAK UCHITEL

A lot of people underestimate Peak Uchitel and climb it without prior acclimatization. These climbers think that the mountain isn't high enough and doesn't require any acclimatization. This is a foolish approach.

AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness) is a real thing. I have read a lot about it and wanted to experience it. I felt AMS while ascending Peak Uchitel. It was a terrible feeling. I had heavy nausea that almost made me turn back. Nausea combined with tiredness, lack of oxygen, and a treacherous trail is a risky mixture of factors.

Some climbers told me about the loss of vision even at 3000 meters altitude. You don't have to be in the death zone (8000+ meters) to experience altitude sickness. Even on lower heights, AMS can be very dangerous.

HOW TO CLIMB PEAK UCHITEL

I understand that you still want to climb Peak Uchitel. The mountain is very attractive for climbers because of loads of factors such as its proximity to Bishkek (the capital of Kyrgyzstan), technical ease, and its impressive height (4545 m).
